The Copyright Hub has been described as a marketplace for rights, both across different sectors of the creative industries and across national borders. The internet is at heart cross-sector, multi-media and cross-border - licensing needs to respond to this new reality. That is the Copyright Hub's vision.
The Copyright Hub is being created to overcome three widespread problems:
- I cannot find my way through the sheer complexity of copyright and need help with navigation, signposting and copyright education
- I cannot find who owns what rights to specific works, for example a novel, and thus ...
- I find it difficult to get a licence to use copyrighted material legally
As a result the Copyright Hub has three clear objectives matching the three problems:
- To be the place where anyone can go to find out more about copyright and copyright licensing and to be educated in copyright matters
- To be a place which encourages creators, rights holders and licensors to register their rights to copyrighted works, the permissions they have granted and the licences they have issued on the registries linked to the Hub
- To be the place where rights users and potential rights users can go to get licences to use copyrighted material legally, with ease of use and low transaction costs being the key features.
